Guiding Young Minds to a Brighter Tomorrow

Specialized Psychiatry for Young Adults

Welcome to Catamount Psych, where we focus on empowering young adults through expert psychiatric care.

Meet Dr. Michael Upton

Dr Michael Upton is a native Vermonter who has been practicing psychiatry for over 25 years. After graduating from the University of Vermont College of Medicine he completed his psychiatry residency at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and then returned to northwestern Vermont where he has lived and worked since 1998.

He has had a varied career which has included working with individuals who have struggled with a variety of psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders.  He is medical director at Otter Creek Associates and Matrix Health Systems, a multidisciplinary mental health practice with offices throughout the state of Vermont.

In addition to his clinical work and administrative work Dr Upton has supervised residents, taught medical students and holds a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont.  He also worked in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the UVM College of Medicine.

Dr. Upton worked at the University of Vermont Counseling and Psychiatry Services for over 20 years, returning from that position in January of 2025,  He began the Catamount Telepsychiatry practice in 2020 in response to needs of students on leave from UVM during the pandemic.

Since leaving UVM student health he has expanded that practice which continues to focus on the care and needs of young adults.  He currently treats students attending UVM, Middlebury, Champlain College and St Michael’s College as well as young adults living in Vermont.

The practice focus is to support college students and young adults to reach their full potential.

Commitment to equal access and social justice:

Dr Upton has had special training in areas of social justice and how social determinants of health can impact the care people receive and their health outcomes.  He has over 2 decades of experience in treating individuals with marginalized identities and is committed to providing excellent care to all his patients.  He understands that providing equitable treatment requires the understanding of specific challenges faced by people who identify as LGBTQ+, people of color, immigrants, first generation students and international students.  He welcomes discussion of the impact of social factors on the health of the people he cares for.
